Tips and Tricks for College Application Success

by Dr. Aimee Weinstein

No matter how you slice it, the first semester of senior year of high school is stressful. In addition to the regular class load, activities and other responsibilities, kids have to work through their college applications, including the omnipresent essays. Even with such conveniences as the Common App and the Coalition App, everything must be filled out and double-checked before sending to any schools. The process inevitably takes more time than anyone plans.

To that end, I have a short list of tips and tricks to use to make it just a little bit easier for you.

  1. Write your essay before school begins if at all possible.
  2. When approaching the essay, write the essay you want to write; looking at the prompts themselves comes later – spin the essay to the prompt, not the other way around.
  3. For every school to which you apply, you need thirty (30!) minutes of allotted time to fill out every form.
  4. Every school, even if they’re on the Common App, will require at least one if not more supplemental essays. They’re often short (250 words or so) but they have to be done and done well.
  5. Use a spreadsheet of some sort (we can send you the one we use) to keep track of schools, dates, supplemental essays, etc.
  6. Look at the New York Times best college essays of 2016 site for ideas about the narrative voice schools enjoy.
  7. Make sure you ask for your recommendations as early in September as possible. Teachers have a lot of them to write; they will be motivated to write them for the students who ask the earliest.

At Inspiring Test Prep we have a myriad of ways to help you on this journey. We offer one-on-one help with the essay as well as general essay reviews. We had excellent success with our essay bootcamps this summer and new classes will be forming (email us to suggest times/dates!). If you’d like to take advantage of the class, or have any questions about the college process and how we can be of assistance, please email Dr. Weinstein at aimee@katedalby.com.

Summer TJ Prep

Take advantage of this early start on TJ prep and get the same course as offered in the fall at the discounted price of $850. That’s a savings of over $100! Class meets for 3 weeks in July 2017, Monday through Thursday, the 10th to 26th.

  • You start with a free, no-obligation at home math diagnostic to determine if a class is the right way to go.
  • After a phone or in-person consultation you can sign up for the course.
  • Then the student comes to take a 2-hour proctored TJ test with math and verbal components.  The sooner that test is taken the sooner we know that the class is the best fit.
  • We meet for the first class on July 10th to review the test and begin the process of optimizing your application through improving math, verbal, and essay skills.
Visit the TJ Course page for more details on this comprehensive review.

Summer Writing Camp

Summer 2017 Writing Camp

Going to camp is always fun, even if you aren’t the outdoorsy type.  Your son or daughter will find the same can be true with Inspiring’s Writing Camp this summer.  Whether students enjoy writing or don’t, our instructor has a series of activities that will get them to enjoy finding apt words, creating engaging prose, and organizing for effect.

Cathy Colglazier, former English chair at McLean HS and TJHSST, will lead students for 3 hours each day in creative non-fiction projects.  Often the class will visit locations around McLean for inspiration as well as read short articles and stories that provide good models for writing.  Basics of solid exposition will be covered — punctuation, grammar, diction — as well as development of style.

If students are planning on applying to TJ or a private school, this workshop is ideal for getting them ready for personal essays.   Target ages:  7th to 10th grade.

Three options for camp:

Instructor:

Cathy Colglazier

Cost:

$350 for one week (15 hours).
If you would like to take more than one week, please call/text Mrs. Colglazier in advance at 703-628-2348
